I recently had the pleasure of attending a photography workshop and it was worth every penny.
The workshop was hosted by @Epicxp and run by @iamJadoreTV and @norteyrazzi. They provided the location, two models @arrinna.k & @anyanya12224, as well as some different lenses, flash’s, and their own considerable experience and knowledge.
It was a very easy format to feel comfortable in (at least as a photographer) as different photographers worked with different models at the same time, spaced around the apartment getting different angles. You could get shots if you wanted to, check them out, and then move position, without feeling obliged to constantly talk or direct to fill the room, as with so many voices, there was always someone saying something. I cannot speak for the models but it was probably overwhelming at parts when there were 3 or 4 cameras pointed at you, all from different angles.
What stood out to me the most was how good it felt to be surrounded by like-minded people. Seeing how they work, talking ideas, adapting ideas, and just letting the shoot flow between models and photographers resulting in some incredible photos for everyone. The environment was open to everything and everyone was respectful, making it a beautiful space to work, with a great vibe throughout.
Another of the many benefits was watching and learning throughout the whole process. Seeing how different people approach the same thing, how they think, how they act. Taking in what professionals do, no matter how small, could change the whole experience for the better. For example, seeing and hearing how they communicated with each other and the models, set up the environment, and paid attention to all the details showed how much the ‘little things matter.
As much as this was about getting experience behind the camera, there’s a lot to learn off-camera and behind the scenes. When needed I always felt like I could ask specific questions about whatever I wanted. This allowed me to learn about how they use lighting, their in-camera settings, editing, workflows, and so on, culminating in an all-inclusive package that was full of knowledge and experience.
Speaking of, the overall experience was incredible. Probably my favourite shoot to date. And not just because of who I was shooting, or shooting with. The entire experience from start to finish and everyone involved showed me the level I want to achieve, and I think I proved to myself that I can hang at that level.
Overall I think this workshop was incredible, and all workshops are worth looking into. They may seem like a lot of money, or you could feel awkward about shooting in front of other people. But others are also thinking like that, and you’re heading into something with like-minded people that have all been there before. The best way to learn is to try, and try again. Even if you’re not happy with your “performance” as a model or photographer, put your heart into it, and the experience alone be worth it. Let alone all the connections you could make.
Never underestimate the power of meeting new people.
